The conservative senator said “every word” of the Affordable Care Act should be repealed during a speech he gave for the Faith & Freedom Coalition Conference on Thursday in Washington, D.C.
“To tell the Catholic Church, to tell people of faith whose faith prohibits it, that they must – their charities, their hospitals — must provide abortifacients, must provide contraceptives and pay for it, regardless of the teachings of their faith,” Cruz said.
“The government has no business trying to order American citizens to contravene our faith,” Cruz said.
Under Obamacare, nearly all health insurers must offer contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients drugs (e.g., “ella”) without co-payments. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and many other religious groups and leaders, have described this mandate as unjust and a violation of religious liberty as granted under the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.
Cruz made his remarks while at the U.S. Capitol where he was introduced as a “hero” of conservative values. The 3-day conference itself is being held at the JW Marriott hotel in Washington, D.C.
Cruz said that freedom, religious liberty, and the Constitution are under attack by the Obama administration.
“Yet I am encouraged that millions of Americans are standing up to defend liberty,” Cruz said.
The three-day conference, “Road to Majority,” includes visits to Capitol Hill to lobby legislators and brainstorming sessions for “building a pro-life conservative majority.”
